"Elm City"
The following is a paragraph that Donald Jackson wrote for the October 1995 issue of The Antique Lock Collector:
Did You Know . . . . . New Haven CT was at one time known as Elm City for the great number of its streets shaded by huge old elm trees. Sargent & Co. moved to New Haven in 1864, and presumably issued the padlock marked Elm City for this reason. This lock appears in their catalog for 1902. Unfortunately in the 1950s the trees were lost to the Dutch elm disease and a little bit of Americana faded away. But the locks are practically immortal.
